Advertisements excel at making us feel like we are missing something. Some of them ask us to equip ourselves with state-of-the-art technology or follow one fashion trend or the other to feel like we truly belong. Marketing is a means of conditioning the mass population into believing that there are inadequacies in their life that only this product can fill by associating feelings of well-being, belonging, and happiness to products. 

Many advertisements associated with skincare and cosmetics focus on making you feel inadequate. What they want you to improve is what is naturally yours. They begin advertising their standards of beauty and their standards of worthiness. They paint pictures of glamour that come with clear skin, no blemishes, perfect tans, thick eyebrows, and glowing highlights. You are given a lifestyle to conform to if you want to be happy. This becomes a standard of something greater than outer beauty. This becomes a standard of being worthy of love and respect. This tarnishes self-esteems for life.

That is not all. In a study for Hashimoto’s, Dr. Izabella Wentz discovered a disturbing secret about cosmetic products that deteriorates thyroid health. There may be a correlation between a certain set of statistics: women, on average, use up to 12 skincare and cosmetic products a day with approximately 168 various chemicals, with men using about half that amount of product. The shocking statistic was that for every one man in the study, seven women developed Hashimoto’s. Perhaps there is an underlying correlation between all the endocrine-upsetting chemicals women come in contact with and thyroid dysfunction in women. Another disturbing statistic links lipstick use with the development of autoimmune diseases like Lupus.

 However, these correlations do not mean that you must choose one or the other. The lesson to learn is that you should be careful and deliberate about what cosmetic and personal care products you choose to use.  

You can find out the level of toxicity in a product using age-old research tools and the more modern EWG’s Skin Deep database that records levels of toxicity found within individual products.
